My interests in hummingbirds didn’t come until later in life, about 5 years ago. After discovering one trapped in the When Does Hibernation Start Because I Am 100% Participating In That Shirt garage I did what most people would do, wiki/Google the shit out of hummingbirds and sprung into action. Having just learned about their bonkers rate of metabolism I knew the hummingbird had to be starving. With my homebrew nectar and a wide straw to feed it from I stood out in the garage and waited… Kind of a long time… Turns out that hummingbirds, especially when in crisis calorie management mode, will go into hibernation immediately after they land. So I made a lot of noise and I let it know I had nectar the best way I could think of and shouted: “IVE GOT NECTAR”.

It inherently trusted me, understood me, or was just hungry enough to fly over and investigate. I could tell the second he caught the scent of the sugar bc he started doing the dodging thing they do with their heads. It took a few more minutes but he finally started to When Does Hibernation Start Because I Am 100% Participating In That Shirt feed out of the straw I was holding. This will sound very stupid I know, but one of the coolest things I’ve experienced was when he made contact with the straw. The straw and water were vibrating and there was something so serene from it. Idk if it was the frequency that it was buzzing, or my mind amplified it but I remember it as calm. As in that is how I have since then pictured the definition of calm.

The When Does Hibernation Start Because I Am 100% Participating In That Shirt calm only lasted literally a few seconds though. Once it started metabolizing the water it wings got faster, and faster and FASTER until it wasn’t even like a sound anymore it was weird. I let it rest and we did 2 more rounds of feeding at which time I got it out of the garage and back on his migration path south for the winter (they take the same path there and back. They do so because of their need to eat so much and going the same way they already know the spots to stop and eat). Hummers are cool, I prefer the economics of a modern sedan though. They are so interesting to watch. If I was going to design an attack helicopter it would be modeled off of them. The precision and agility that they move with are uncanny.
